A t shirt business can take many forms and can be approached in a variety of ways which are covered in our eBook Fuel for Design, but once you are ready to start selling shirts you need a solid marketing plan!
Below are just a few of the many ways you can market your tees online and if you enjoy these be sure to check out our eBook on How to Sell Shirts for tons of more tips like these!
Tips on Selling Shirts
1. Brand Your Business
Properly branding your business is something that must be considered from day 1 and is essential for long term success and important if you are looking to make the most money possible selling your tees. You need to develop an identity for your business which includes a logo, color scheme, message you want to convey via your tees and so on.
Your name should be consistent and so should your branding efforts. As people become more familiar with your brand you should see an increase in sales, more brand loyalty and return customers if done right!
2. Optimize Your Site
Search engine optimization is by far the most overlooked step of selling shirts online. Without the proper utilization of search engine optimization you will be missing out on tons of traffic and potential sales. By targeting certain keywords and ranking well for them in search engines you can build up a steady traffic base and sales each month.
3. Target Longtail Keywords
When working on search engine optimization you should consider starting with longtail keywords which are multiple word keywords people type into Google to find something such as: “Funny T Shirts Online” as opposed to “Funny Shirts” which would be harder to rank for in the search engines. You can use a tool such as the Google Keyword Tool to find longtail keywords and to read more about search engnine optimization check out SEO Moz a great resource on the topic.
4. Post on Design News Sites
Many designs sites have recently started including user generated content which is something I have only seen in the design niche so far. You can submit links to news posts about your site or post links to cool t shirt designs or design related blog posts. Its a great way to get some backlinks and get traffic!

5. Join Forums
Becoming an active member of forums is often talked about, but few follow through with this tactic. You can’t just sign up and make one post to your store. You need to be active, make a few posts a day, respond to other people’s posts and you will see much better results in getting traffic and links back to your store. People don’t respect spammers, they respect active, quality members so be good and post often! =)
